Short Ride
Just 9 for the short ride and without a leader or a route there was a quick debate of little Almscliffe or Wetherby. The lure of coffee at Kofi and Co swayed us so it was out to Knaresborough then onto Wetherby. Home along the Harland Way, Spofforth and Follifoot where everyone started to make their own way home. Medium Steady Ride
Eight of us set off on a still but chilly morning on the Medium Steady outing heading in a slightly roundabout way to Boroughbridge. However, numbers were to vary along the way (a graph is available on request). Firstly we picked up Corinne and Liz at Low Bridge making it 10 as we headed along the river-side. Unfortunately, by the time we got to the end of Abbey Road Debby’s rear tyre had developed a rather strange deformity and, probably wisely, she decided she couldn’t carry on; Gia kindly remaining with her to ensure she got back safely. We weren’t down to 8 for long as we then picked up Peter shortly after Farnham. As we headed through the Dunsforths the clouds were beginning to clear and we could enjoy the warmth of the sun. Being among the early arrivals at the Hideaway we got the coveted top table. The scones were first class. Carrying on in ever improving conditions via Bishops Monkton we were down to 8 again as we re-assembled at the top of Sandy Bank; Peter having headed off for an early bath. With pressing Easter Sunday commitments Andy, Gordon and Martin pushed on from there leaving a core group of 5. From the golf club Corinne and Liz headed homewards leaving Rachel, Helen and me to return (more or less) to the show ground. 34 miles and about 1600ft for me. Thanks to all for an enjoyable day out. Medium Plus Steady Ride
With no designated ride leader, Mike W and myself took over the responsibility for the ride. Prior to starting out we made it clear to all participants that ride was to be at a steady pace, as per the ride description.
After the coming together of other various rides at Low Bridge, six of us broke free and headed for Ferrensby. The ride out to York was fairly uneventful. Now that the farm shop/tea room at Beningbrough Hall is no longer open we decided not to use the published but take the alternative route around Newton on Ouse by using Back Lane/New Road. We were in for a pleasant surprise as we approached Overton. A new cycle way has been built to accommodate the construction works for Yorkshire GREEN. Given that it was Easter and York would be very busy we elected to go to the Garden Centre at Askam Richard. But this was also very busy, mainly due to other cyclists, and we had to wait a bit before being served. This gave us the opportunity to soak up some sun and watch the gliders being towed into the air. There was a small problem on the return journey, Andy A had a puncture, which we suspect was due a very rough but of road near Tockwith. Overall a classic steady ride, clocked in about 57 miles. PCJ
