Cycling in North Yorkshire with Harrogate Wheel Easy
Harrogate Wheel Easy started in 2006 and is one of the largest leisure cycling clubs in the UK. It’s for people who like the idea of leisurely and more challenging cycle rides in Harrogate, the surrounding countryside and out into the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and Wolds.
Harrogate Wheel Easy aims to encourage people of all levels of cycling ability to experience the pleasures of cycling, one of the best and most enjoyable ways of keeping fit, as well as being the most environmentally friendly form of transport. Some members now ride ebikes.
Where and When?
Wheel Easy rides usually start at Hornbeam Park railway station every Sunday and Wednesday, leaving at 9.30am, except the EG’s ride which meets on Wednesdays at Low Bridge, Knaresborough, and leaves at 10.00am. Lengths of rides vary according to the weather and season. Most rides have a coffee and/or lunch stop. Details are shown on the Ride Calendar
Short/Beginners rides are usually around 15 miles, at a very gentle pace. Newcomers who would like to try Wheel Easy but are unsure about their fitness should contact us first (details below) to check that the short ride will suit them.
Medium rides are often around 25 miles and a maximum of about 35. The pace is steady, generally 9-11mph on average.
Medium Plus rides are often 40-60 miles at either a Touring Pace of around 11-12mph or a Fast Pace of about 13-16mph.
Long rides are mainly between 60 and 90 miles during summer, less during winter. They are at Touring Pace (about 12mph), but this is adjusted to suit the riders on the day – no-one will be left behind! They include many opportunities for riders to increase their distances over flatter routes..
Away Day rides give members an opportunity to ride in different areas. Usually, you will need to transport your bike to the starting point.
Off Road rides are organised from time to time, are usually non-technical but occasionally more challenging.
Poddlers is a slower, leisurely ride. Can be anything from 20 to 35 miles.
Wednesday Wanderers are rides of usually up to 35 miles at a medium pace aiming to be back by 1.30pm.
Wednesday Rides are rides of about 30-50 miles at a medium pace.
Long Rides are rides of about 45-80 miles at a touring pace.
EG’s Rides start at 10.00am at Low Bridge, Knaresborough and can be out for most of the day. They are frequently 50 to 60+ miles at varying speeds.
Visiting Cyclists Welcome
Yorkshire is a wonderful area for cycling and has always attracted many touring cyclists, even more so thanks to Le Tour de France 2014 which came through Harrogate on both the first two days. For many, joining Wheel Easy rides offers an ideal way to find out what makes our area special. Visitors who would like to cycle with us please contact us first by phone or email.
