Thirsk, Ampleforth and the Howardian Hills (40 miles)
Awayday route. Start in Thirsk at the Millgate Car Park. Toilets in the Car Park. Cafés in centre of Thirsk.
The route ascend to, then winds its way round the base of the North York Moors escarpment, through some delightful villages, passing the ruins of Byland Abbey to the visitors centre at Ampleforth Abbey (excellent café stop). From there through the gated Newburgh estate to Coxwold (café if required), Carlton Husthwaite and back along, perhaps, more familiar lanes to Thirsk.
