Route description: Bagby, Wass, Oswaldkirk, Ampleforth, Helmsley, Rievaulx, Byland, Boltby, Kirkby Knowle, Thirsk. This route through the Hambleton Hills visits two Cisterian Abbey ruins; Byland and Rievaulx, and also Ampleforth Abbey which is somewhat more recent and in a better state of repair. The route includes a descent of Boltby (or Sneck Yate) Bank which requires due care and attention and a confidence that the brakes are in good working order.
Travel time from Harrogate: 45 minutes
Car Parking: Millgate Car Park, Thirsk. £5.80 per day, cards accepted.
Toilets/Refreshments at start: Toilets are available at the car park; free entry. There are few options for coffee around Market Place opening early. Yorks of Thirsk opens at 9am.
Coffee Stop: Ampleforth Abbey tea room (15 miles).
Lunch Stop: Rievaulx Abbey cafe (29 miles)
