The Harland Way Update

Updated Jan 31 2025

Members have reported the unfinished state of the improvements to the Harland Way. We have passed their comments on to North Yorkshire and their latest response is below. It is really helpful for members to be our scouts and keep North Yorkshire informed as it is important that the finished job is fit for purpose. Many thanks to Paul Blackham and Mike Winterhalder for their reports, Gia.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire said: ‘Unfortunately the weather is still not good enough for us to return to site. I have spoken to our contractor who has assured me they are keeping a close eye on the weather, and as soon as they feel the conditions are suitable they will return to complete the unfinished sections and any remedial works required, as well as the final surfacing.

I am sorry that we can’t progress this sooner but the conditions do need to be right to complete the next stage or we risk abortive work, causing more damage or having costly materials spoil. We do have signage out warning about the uneven surface but sadly for now that’s all we can do until the weather improves.

As soon as I have a more positive update I will be sure to let you know.’

Original Report – 27 December 2024

This was the Harland Way on Boxing Day. Work in progress to improve the Harland Way. The first task was to widen the path to its original width and clear vegetation.

It is now being “resurfaced” with a mixture of hard core and soft shale. The original was only ever a rolled surface of the old track bed. The results are good and when finished should make this a route that cyclists can use again.

This is being funded by a pot of money rescued when Harrogate Borough Council was merged with North Yorkshire. The funds had been allocated for cycling by HBC so Harrogate and District Cycle Action worked hard to secure this money and North Yorkshire have stuck to their promise that they would use it for this purpose.
