The Big ‘Un Ride – Sun 14 July

Update: It happened! – check out the  ride report.

The Annual Ridiculously Long and Hard Wheel Easy Tour of The Dales in A Day – aka The Big ‘Un – will take place this year on  Sunday 14th July.

Right, so having put you off , let me entice you again with a more reasonable day’s ride at Touring Pace departing Hornbeam Cap park at 8:00, heading to Grassington for early brunch, then over Fleet Moss ( the easy way) to Hawes and Buttertubs ( again, the easy way) into Swaledale. The traditional ride past Tan Hill ( no stopping) is optional, but is a great achievement once you’ve done it, as it does involve the hardest of the three ways to Tan Hill.

Either via Tan Hill or not , we usually tea time in Reeth (what happened to lunch ?) and then head home via Grinton , Leyburn , Middleham, Masham etc. I have ONCE made it back in time for chips at Gravellys by 20:00.. The ride is about 110 miles and about 9,000 feet of climbing.

I do intend to keep this a Touring Pace ride (i.e. Avge 12-14 mph) , but riders can dash ahead if they wish. There is also opportunity for riders to join for part of the route if they can organise transport – e,g, park in Hawes and ride back there from Leyburn etc.

Peter Lawley,

ps – cancelled if wet !
