Terry Smith and the Sustrans Rangers are always looking for new volunteers to help keep the cycle paths that we all use regularly, as clear as possible and without this effort on their part many would be in a poor state and in some cases quite dangerous. So if you have a couple of hours available on the second tuesday of any month please turn out on what is both a working and a social occasion. Details of where and when to meet and the work to do are usually e-mailed to all members a few days before each session.
Next Rangers Session is on Tuesday 11th February 2020 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon and Terry writes:
As you may know the proposed upgrade to the Follifoot Underpass under the A658 bypass is a long-running tale of disappointment. But, things are beginning to move. In preparation, we’ve been asked to clear the overgrown vegetation from the approach paths to the tunnel. This involves cutting back hedges and the urgency is that we need to do this before birds start nesting for the new season.
For our next work morning on 11th Feb ‘20, therefore, we will be seeing what kind of impact we can make at the Follifoot Tunnel approaches.
It’s at the usual time of 10.00-12.00 and for those coming by car I think the best place to park would be on the stub of Pannal Road, near to the dead-end. The south side approaches can be reached easily on the bridleway leading from the dead-end. For those coming by bike, please take extra care in crossing the bypass.
The work will involve cutting back brambles etc. It would be helpful if you could bring your own favourite shears, secateurs, loppers or whatever you feel best able to use. Stout gloves and footwear would be useful as the path is likely to be muddy. As usual I will bring the barrow-load of tools. If anyone could bring another wheelbarrow, that would help a great deal. Hopefully we will have some power tools courtesy of our accredited users. If so, our tasks will be to clear the cuttings as much as anything else.
If you are available on 11th Feb you will be most welcome to join us and keep up the splendid turnouts that the group has had in recent months.
The after-session coffee venue is something I’ll give some thought to, but any ideas for a local spot would be very welcome.
