Saturday Ride 16th Oct
The Saturday Ride had only 4 riders for today’s route 79 to Thruscross and Pateley
Steady pace lovely fresh dry weather. We opted for Greenhow descent instead of Peat Lane as overnight rain will have left it very rough.
Great lunch at Talbot’s on the Main Street, followed by Silver Hill climb and the usual return.

Five intrepid souls stepped forward for the Short ride on Sunday – a pleasant 23 mile spin out to Swinsty via Little Almscliff and then down through Kettlesing Bottom to Sophies for coffee. All went well on the way out as there was not too much traffic and the threatening rain never really materialised. The brief crossing of the Skipton Road was not too pleasant, but once that was done it was a lovely descent down through the villages to Hampsthwaite, where we sat in the outside tented area in bright sun for coffee and assorted scones, cakes and bacon, although Dennis had to leave us as his Sunday lunch was beckoning. A pleasant run out in good company, plus the rare chance to ride in the slipstream of a 90 year old. Chapeau, Dennis! Vince
With the threat of rain all morning, not many riders turned up for the rides, but the rain never came. Seven riders set off, one said he would be leaving us at Boroughbridge, the weather did brighten up with a little bit of blue sky. At Boroughbridge six of us then made our way to Dishforth and Ripon. Suggestions were made to go on to Fountains Abbey Cafe another suggestion to the Olive Tree Cafe at Tates Nursery, which we did. Very good service, nice menue and a good selection of cakes. Plenty of room inside and a large outside seated area for those warm sunny days. Can highly recommend the Turkish Delight cake and even better after a large blackcurrant scone with jam and thick cream! We came back to Ripon and then on through Littlethorpe and the Mountgaret Estate, we decided not to ride through the ford and give way to the horses instead, holding the gate open with lots of thanks from them. About 40miles. Chris R.
We thought we would adapt the medium plus route as we went Fewston / Timble direction on Wednesday. The adapted route was offered at the show ground and eight opted to head towards Pateley via Pennypot, Thruscross Reservoir, Duck Street and Peat Lane. There was certainly a few hills which challenged the group especially along Hoodstorth Lane. The best decent was down Peat Lane although the final section was tricky due to the gravel and steepness.
Before coffee and excellent refreshments at Toft Gate Farm, Bob had a puncture and opted to return home via Thornthwaite, Padside and Darley. Maris had trouble with her gears but decided to carry on and do her repairs at home. After Pateley we headed home the quickest way via Glasshouses, Toll Bridge and Hampsthwaite. Thank you Yvonne, Maris, Bob, Tim, Monica, Gia and Debbie for an excellent ride and good company. Paul
