Masham to Catterick 17 April 2024

Proposed new route for April due to closure of A59.

Route Length:37.5 miles
Climbing:1700ft / 520m
Route Description:Repeat of a route we did in 2021 from Masham to Catterick and back; this time in an anti-clockwise direction. A few pleasant climbs with views of Dales and Moors and mostly quiet country roads.
The route below has been updated to include some short diversions to sites of historical interest: the chapel of St Mary at Snape Castle (home to the mother and wife of Richard III, and of Katherine Parr before she married Henry VIII), the leech house at Bedale, and Bolton on Swale church for the memorials to Henry Jenkins, the oldest Yorkshireman so far ( died aged 169).
Travel Time:50mins (22 miles from Harrogate)
Car Parking:Parking beside tennis courts and cricket field (What3Words: ///debater.unsightly.impulsive), with overflow on the other side of the bowling green (parking at the tennis courts avoids the mud and potholes). There is an honesty box for parking fees.
Facilities at Start:Toilets are just off the Market square at the top of the steps ( 50m) and are free.
There are a couple of cafes in the Square but only the Bordar House Tea Rooms open at 9am for coffee.

Depart:Assemble at the car park by the tennis courts, with the first group ready to roll out at 9:30am.
