Wheel Easy Ride Calendar

Wheel Easy rides start at Hornbeam Park railway station every Sunday and Wednesday, leaving at 9.30am, except the EG’s ride which meets on Wednesdays at Low Bridge, Knaresborough, and leaves at 10.00am. Lengths of rides vary according to the weather and season. Most rides have a coffee and/or lunch stop. Please arrive in good time. For ride descriptions click here.

Short/Beginners ride - Dennis Butler. About 20 miles.

An easy paced ride via Bogs Lane and the  Beryl Burton Way to Knaresborough, Lingerfield, Farnham, Ferrensby and Arkendale. Continuing on to Staveley, Copgrove, Burton Leonard and Ripley via Limepit Lane and the Mountgarret Estate.

Medium Slow ride

Medium ride -Volunteers Needed

Darley, Thornthwaite, Menwith, 28 miles.

Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley, Hollybank Woods, Birstwith, Darley. After P.O. L. up Sheepcote Lane, 2nd R. along Crake Lane, straight on at X-roads to Thornthwaite. L up My Love Lane, L at T junction at top. Turn L along Menwith Hill Road. Straight over X-roads. 2nd R just before Wayside Farm onto Sleights Lane. Ist L onto Crow Hill Lane. Bear R at next 2 junctions then L at T junction onto Tang Road. Ist R onto Barse Beck Lane. Follow this road down into Hampsthwaite (café). Return to Harrogate via Killinghall and the Greenway.

Medium Plus ride - Peter Jackson, Volunteer Needed

Route (017-2015 ) York, Beningborough, Marston Moor, 57 miles.

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale. Over A1(M) and L on A168 then R past Marton to B6265. R then L to Great Ouseburn. L after Ouseburn to Aldwark Bridge.
Cross Aldwark Bridge and turn R and follow the signs through Linton and Newton-on-Ouse to Beningborough Hall. (Farm Shop cafe). Leaving the Hall continue south on Sustrans Route 65 to York City Centre along by the Ouse.
Cross to R bank of Ouse and continue past Rowntree Park to the Millenium Bridge. Shortly after the path turns R up to road, turn L and almost immediately R to Knavesmire racecourse. Follow path over the Knavesmire, eventually past the Sun sculpture, taking the R fork and ultimately come to the A64 near Tesco. Cycle path goes alongside road for a couple of miles and goes up to roundabout. Go across, towards Askham Bryan and take L to Askham Richard. Through village and L to Long Marston. Continue in same direction for Marston Moor, Tockwith, Cowthorpe, over the A1(M), eventually meeting the B6164 where turn R and then L in Little Ribston following the signs to Spofforth. R to Follifoot and back via Rudding Park to Harrogate.

Short/Beginners ride - Martin Weeks

Medium Slow ride - Volunteer Needed

Medium ride - Alun Davies

Route 21 Tadcaster, 38miles. Mainly flat.

Hornbeam, Burnbridge, Kirby Overblow, Sicklinghall, Linton, Collingham, Bramham, straight on towards Tadcaster, take 2nd R, head over dual carriage way towards Sutton. Just before Sutton, turn L to Tadcaster, recrossing A64, and at main road turn R  and go past brewery.
Cross over river & turn 1st L to Wighill. Just before entering Wighill turn L towards Walton. Pass through Thorp Arch Trading estate and join cycle path back to Wetherby.
Return to Harrogate via Spofforth and Follifoot. (cafes at Tadcaster, Thorp Arch or Wetherby)

(Short route – At Bramham turn L and follow the cycle path next to A1(M) into Wetherby)

Medium Plus ride - Liz Pugh, Volunteer Needed

Greygarth Monument, 40 miles.

Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley up to the Drovers crossroads, straight on, down the steep hill (caution, bend at bottom) L through Sawley, to Risplith (café). High Grantley, L on little back lane at the recreation ground, immediate R  fork, L at the T junction, up to Coal Hill above the tiny hamlet of Dallow . From Coal Hill you should see the Greygarth Tower. To reach it drop down by turning R at the T junction, then turn L and climb back up on a single track road which has a sign saying "no passing places for one mile". Leave bikes to walk to the Monument and climb up the tower (look for Roseberry Topping). From the top of the moor turn R, (L is a bridlepath to Ramsgill).  It  is a fairground ride of a descent to Laverton going straight through the village, not crossing the beck, T junction R at the top of the hill, next T junction R again (not Grantley, but Winksley/Galphay signed) and immediately L at the fork. Follow road past the caravan park at Winksley Banks to Winksley village with its huge church tower, then Aldfield and Fountains (café). Back to Harrogate via Ripley and the Greenway.

Route 183, Myton-on-Swale Aldwark, Boroughbridge, 39 miles, mainly flat

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, L and R on A168, Marton, R and L on B6265 to Great Ouseburn, L to Aldwark Toll Bridge. L to Aldwark, L to Flawith and keep L to Myton-on-Swale (plaque about site of battle by the bridlepath bridge). Back to junction turn L and keep turning L to Brafferton and Thornton Bridge. Turn L and follow road to Boroughbridge (cafe). Back to Harrogate via Minskip, Staveley and Knaresborough. (Short route - go direct from Great Ouseburn to Boroughbridge via the Dunsforths)

Medium Plus ride - Helen and Keith Tate

Route 47 Jill's Hills, 50miles.

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, North Rigton, Stainburn, Leathley, Otley, Askwith, Middleton, Langbar, Beamsley, Ilkley (café), Otley and return to Harrogate via Weeton, Dunkeswick and Kirkby Overblow.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Copgrove, Bishop Monkton, Littlethorpe, through village, L into Dallamires lane (just before bridge to Boroughbridge road), R at T junction,2nd L onto Mawson Street, R at X roads to Heckler Lane (becomes Barefoot St), cross bridge, L into Borrage Lane, follow round Mallorie Park Drive. Join Studley Rd. L to Studley. Up through deer park. (cafes either by lake or at Visitor Centre). Fountains Abbey, L fork up How Hill Road. L at T junction, R to Bishop Thornton, Shaw Mills, over B6165, L at Clint to Hampsthwaite (café) and Knox to Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride - Monica and David Webber

Route 94 A Grassington, Appletreewick, Bolton Abbey, Ilkley, Otley, 64miles. 

 Hornbeam, Squinting Cat, Beckwithshaw, Menwith Hill, Duck Street, Greenhow, turn L onto B6265, Stump Cross Caverns, Dibble's Bridge (long steep descent!), Grassington (Café), Threshfield, Burnsall, Appletreewick, cross River Wharfe on wooden footbridge at Cavendish Pavilion, Bolton Abbey , Beamsley, Ilkley, Askwith, Weston (Cock Pit Farm Tea Rooms), Otley, and then return to Harrogate via Farnley, Leathley or Castley/Dunkeswick.

Route 145 Bramham, Wetherby, Sicklinghall, 32 miles.

Hornbeam, Showground, Follifoot, Spofforth, Little Ribston, Wetherby, cycle path under A1 to Thorp Arch but turn R just before towards Boston Spa. L at junction then R in Boston Spa (cafes). L following cycle route signs to Clifford and Bramham. At Bramham cross over A1(M) and continue straight on until R turn which leads you to Collingham. At bottom of Jewitt Lane turn L on a minor road, crossing the A58 just past the shops. Turn R for Linton and 2 Ls to Sicklinghall. Continue to Kirkby Overblow, Walton Head Lane. R on A61, over roundabout, L to Burn Bridge until R on Rossett Green Lane and into Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride - Michael Inglis, Gia Margolis

Route (017-2015) York, Beningborough, Marston Moor, 57 miles.

Route 32 Wetherby, Tockwith, Walshford, 32 miles. Mainly flat.
Hornbeam, Burnbridge, Kirkby Overblow, Sicklinghall, Wetherby. Railway path past racecourse towards Walton. Follow new cycle path and turn L on to Rudgate Lane just before Walton village.
Cross B1224 towards Cattal. Before Tockwith Airfield turn R at South Field Lane into Tockwith Village. (Two pubs). Through Tockwith and rejoin Roman Road to Cattal. Go over bridge, and L to Hunsingore. Go over A1 to Bridge Inn, Walshford, and join cycle path back to Wetherby (cafes).
Sustrans railway path (route 66) to Spofforth, Follifoot and back to Harrogate.
(At Wetherby, alternative routes back via Kirk Deighton, Little Ribston and Knaresborough, or Kirk Deighton, North Deighton, Spofforth  into Harrogate.

Route 172A Chevin Road, Otley and Old Pool Bank 32 miles

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Stainburn and along forest track. L at the gate and follow road down through 2 gates. At junction R at fork, follow road through R hand bend to T junction. R here and over Lindley Bridge. At junction by school turn R and drop down into Otley.

Straight on over the river and through the town to the traffic lights by the market square. Turn L, at next lights turn R . L at junction, passing Chevin Cycles to go up East Chevin Road. At top of hill take L fork to junction with A658. L for short distance then L onto Old Pool Bank Road and follow into Pool. Cross river then L to Castley, Weeton, L and R on A61 to Kirby Overblow, Rudding and Harrogate.

Route 174/015-2015 Bedale, Masham, Kirklington, 62miles.

Hornbeam, Ripley, Drovers, Sawley, R and L across B6265, High Grantley, Kirkby Malzeard, Grewelthorpe. R (NW direction) to Ilton Grange Farm then R to Swinton and Masham. Cross river at  Masham. L to Thirn x roads where R to Thornton Watlass and on to Bedale. B6268 SW out of Bedale and L to Snape.  R at Carthorpe, Kirklington, R fork across B6267, Sutton Howgrave, Wath, Hutton Conyers and into Ripon. On to Littlethorpe, Knaresborough and Harrogate.

Route 148A Risplith, Brimham, Hampsthwaite, 34 miles. (Avoiding steep hill)

Hornbeam, Claro Road, Dragon Bridge, Greenway. Through Ripley to B6165, R up Scarah Bank, straight on at Drovers X roads, R down Watergate Lane and at end turn L [ie not down to Fountains], take first R to Sawley. Follow through village to B6265. Turn R to  Risplith (café). Return to Sawley junction but stay straight on on B6265. After 2 miles or so turn L to Brimham. Past rocks, L at cross roads and R down Stripe Lane. L at bottom on B6165, first R to Hartwith toll bridge, L to Birstwith. L just before shops onto Wreaks Road and continue up Clint Bank to junction, R onto Clint Bank Road and L on Hollybank Lane to Ripley, Nidderdale Greenway back to Harrogate

Aldwark, Easingwold, Coxwold, Hutton Sessay, 58 miles.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, L on A168 and R to Marton. R on B6265 and L to Great Ouseburn. Turn L to cross Aldwark Bridge, straight on to Youlton, Alne, Alne Station, Easingwold (café) Follow cycle route out of Easingwold but go straight on where the cycle route goes L. Take 2 L turns to  Oulston. Continue to Newburgh Priory and Coxwold (café). Straight on through Coxwold, past church and continue until L turn to Carlton Husthwaite. R and over A19 to  Hutton Sessay, Little Sessay, Pilmoor,  R at T junction towards Cundall but soon L at Thornton Bridge to Milby, Boroughbridge, Minskip, Stavely, Farnham, Knaresborough, Hornbeam.

100 mile ride - Dave S. 07:30am Start at Hornbeam

Please advise Dave dave@siswick.me.uk if you intend to do the ride. Riders can turn up on the day but we need some idea of numbers.

If this ride was any flatter, it would be downhill all the way!!

Hornbeam Park, Low Bridge, Little Ribston, Cowthorpe, Rudston, Wighill, Tadcaster.

Costa Coffee opens 09:00.

Leave Tadcaster on A659, south west, passing brewery on left to traffic lights, turn left A162
1.25mls turn left B1223 through Ulleskelf, Ryther, Cawood & Wistow to Selby.
Morrisons located on side roads south of Abbey.
Return to Abbey turn rt. A19 to cross swing bridge.
Follow A19 east past flour mills to roundabout & turn left, SP Barlby.
0.25 mile at Highfield View turn right SP (A63).
At roundabout take 2nd exit A63 Osgodby & Howden.
250yds., after slight right, turn left on Sand Lane to Osgodby.
Follow SP South Duffield (Care left @ Xrds 100yds)
Enter South Duffield @ telephone box & pump, turn right SP Menthorpe.
0.5ml turn left SP Menthorpe & approx 1 ml turn left SP North Duffield & Menthorpe.
Approach North Duffield carefully crossing A163 @ staggered Xrd.
Follow side road swinging left & keeping right @ village green to Skipwith.
Leaving Skipwith, staying right past church, around right hand bend, turn right SP Thorganby.
Follow road through to Wheldrake towards Crockey Hill (leading to York).

Strawberry Fields café (A19).

South on A19 for 300m, turn right Howden Lane. After 1M join cycle path North direction York.

Right turn immediately after going under A64, follow cycle path to racecourse, across Bishopthorpe Road, first right down snicket (or ginnel), onto riverside path. Head North (Left). Straight over at Station Road and continue on riverside; up and over river at railway bridge, continuing North up riverside.

Continue to Shipton then Left to Beningbrough, Newton-on-Ouse, Aldwark, Ouseburn, Dunsforths, Aldborough, Boroughbridge, Roecliffe.

Tea stop chez moi.

Bishop Monkton, Markington, Drovers’ Crossroads, Ripley, Greenway, Hornbeam.
