Wheel Easy Ride Calendar

Wheel Easy rides start at Hornbeam Park railway station every Sunday and Wednesday, leaving at 9.30am, except the EG’s ride which meets on Wednesdays at Low Bridge, Knaresborough, and leaves at 10.00am. Lengths of rides vary according to the weather and season. Most rides have a coffee and/or lunch stop. Please arrive in good time. For ride descriptions click here.

Route 17 Boroughbridge Great Ouseburn Ferrensby Knaresborough, 35 miles, mainly flat

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Burton Leonard, Bishop Monkton, R to Roecliffe, Boroughbridge (café ), Aldborough, Lower Dunsforth, and Upper Dunsforth, Great Ouseburn, Arkendale, Ferrensby, Farnham, Knaresborough,  (café),Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride - Helen & Keith Tate

Eccup, Scarcroft, Rigton Ridge - 44 miles, some hills
Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby Overblow, on to A61 where turn L.  Turn R after Harewood Bridge, L up Weardly Bank.  L to follow route over Eccup reservoir dam, cross A61 to Manor House Lane.  L at T junction, to top of Wigton Lane.  L towards East Keswick but first R towards Scarcroft.  Straight on at 2 crossroads, past golf course.  Cross A58 towards Thorner but then L to East Rigton at T junction.  Follow ridge through East Rigton and towards Collingham.  Turn R up hill at Collingham/Compton crossroads.  Follow route into Bramham.  Up steep hill by village cross and follow route to Clifford and then to Boston Spa.  Down to cross River Wharfe and keep left to cross Thorp Arch/Wetherby road and pick up cycle path to Wetherby (cafes).  Then, Kirk Deighton, L at North Deighton to Spofforth then Follifoot, Rudding Park, Showground, Hornbeam

Short/Beginners ride - Volunteer Needed

Medium ride – Volunteer Needed

Route 164 Timble, Blubberhouses, Menwith Hill, 29miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam. Beckwithshaw, Little Almscliffe, Fewston, Timble, then at main road turn R to Blubberhouses. R on A59, and L up Hardisty Hill (steep). 2nd R on to Menwith Hill Road and continue past Menwith Hill and straight on to Meg Gate where R to Clapham Green and Hampsthwaite (cafe), Killinghall, Greenway, Hornbeam. Hilly.(Alternative R just past Menwith Hill, L through Staupes, straight on at X roads, L at Y junction, R at X roads, L and L to Meg Gate and R to Clapham Green etc. Lovely quiet route)

Medium Plus ride - Michael Inglis, Steve Wright

Up to the Drovers crossroads, straight on, down the steep hill (caution, bend at bottom) L through Sawley, to Risplith (café). High Grantley, L on little back lane at the recreation ground, immediate R  fork, L at the T junction, up to Coal Hill above the tiny hamlet of Dallow . From Coal Hill you should see the Greygarth Tower. To reach it drop down by turning R at the T junction, then turn L and climb back up on a single track road which has a sign saying "no passing places for one mile". Leave bikes to walk to the Monument and climb up the tower (look for Roseberry Topping). From the top of the moor turn R, (L  is a bridlepath to Ramsgill).  It  is a fairground ride of a descent to Laverton going straight through the village, not crossing the beck, T junction R at the top of the hill, next T junction R again (not Grantley, but Winksley/Galphay signed) and immediately L at the fork. Follow road past the caravan park at Winksley Banks to Winksley village with its huge church tower, then Aldfield and Fountains (café). Back to Harrogate via Ripley and the Greenway.

Cowthorpe, Cattal, Whixley, Tancred Farm for first stop @ 12.8 miles.  Then Aldwark Bridge, Alne, Easingwold, Crayke, Brandsby, Stearsby, Whenby, Sheriff Hutton (lunch).  Return via Sutton-on-the-Forest, Huby, Tollerton, Alne Cross, Aldwark Bridge, Great Ouseburn, Marton, Arkendale, Ferrensby, to Knaresborough Low Bridge.  62Miles. A variation on some of our usual rides, weather permitting of course.

Short/Beginners ride - Paul Blackham

Medium ride - Volunteer Needed

Route 37 Hampsthwaite, Bishop Thornton, Knaresborough, 28 miles. Some hills.

Hornbeam, Leadhall Lane, Green Lane, Beckwith Rd, turn R down Otley Rd, and then L on to Harlow Moor Road. Over Oakdale Bridge and straight on over roundabout on Penny Pot Lane. Turn R after 0.5miles signed Hampsthwaite. Continue over A59, drop down, then turn R at T junction into Hampsthwaite. Bear R at village green to climb up Clint Bank and at T junction turn R..
At X roads at   B6165 go straight on. Continue down to Shaw Mills village, then climb up to Bishop Thornton. At X roads continue straight on to Markington. At the far end of the village turn L for Bishop Monkton. Continue over A61 to Bishop Monkton then turn R following signs for Knaresborough (café). Return to Harrogate up main road or Beryl Burton Way. 

Medium Plus ride - Peter Jackson, Volunteer Needed

Route 41 Vale of York to Easingwold, 50 miles. (Mainly flat)

Hornbeam, Knaresborough Low Bridge, Farnham, Ferrensby, Arkendale. L on A168 and 1st R past Marton. R on B6265 and 1stL to Great Ouseburn.  Through Ouseburn, L to cross Aldwark Bridge, L towards Aldwark Manor. Follow signs for Alne and pick up cycle route 65 to Easingwold. At roundabout turn R and then take L into town centre for café. Reverse route out of town and head towards Raskelf then Helperby. In Helperby turn R to Thornton Bridge. Cross the river and turn L towards and into Boroughbridge. Return any route.

Route 14 Wetherby and Cowthorpe, 27 miles. Mainly flat.

Hornbeam, Follifoot, Spofforth, Cycletrack to Wetherby. Out of Wetherby on cycle track, continuing to Walton Village.  Turn L, R at the church then L to Rudgate Lane junction and turn L. Cross Wetherby-York road and continue to next X roads. Turn L to Cowthorpe and on to Little Ribston Knaresborough, Abbey Road, Calcutt, Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride – Janet Glynn, Gia Margolis

Route 46 Yeadon Tarn, 40 miles. Hilly.

Leadhall Lane, Burn Bridge, A61 over roundabout and L to Kirkby Overblow.
At A61 L then R to Dunkeswick to Castley. Over Pool Bridge to Pool and L onto A659, approx 1.5 miles. Shortly after railway bridge turn R on Creskeld Lane and into Bramhope. Through the estate, straight over A660 towards Old Bramhope. Cross A658 and after about a mile turn L at T junction, 2nd R to East Carlton and straight on to Yeadon Tarn. Return back through East Carlton and left into Otley (café). Return to Harrogate via Lindley or Castley

Route 81 Brimham Rocks, return via Warsill, 28 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley, Hollybank Lane, R to Clint , R to B6165.Turn L at B6165 towards Burnt Yates. Take R fork signposted Brimham Rocks, R at X roads to Brimham Rocks. Carry on to R turn to Warsill and follow road to Ripley (café stop). Back to Harrogate via the Greenway.

Medium Plus ride -Helen Bevis, Justin Keen

Route 85 Beningbrough loop, 40 miles. Flat.

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Ferrensby, Arkendale, cross over A1 turn L and first R towards Marton, B6265 turn R, first L to Great Ouseburn, L to Aldwark Bridge, R to Linton on Ouse, Newton on Ouse, Beningbrough (café ). Return over Aldwark Bridge, L to Thorpe Underwood, Whixley (café at Tancred Farm), over A59 to Cattal, Hunsingore, Walshford, Little Ribston. Then via Knaresborough or Spofforth to Harrogate.

Hampsthwaite, Menwith and Fewston Farm Shop, 29 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Knox bridge, cross A61 to Grainbeck Lane. L and R to Hampsthwaite. In Hampsthwaite village left L up the main street, next R then 2nd R. Next L into Tang. Straight on towards Kettlesing Bottom. Next R, straight on over X roads. L at T junction to continue past Menwith Hill. R and L at X roads (ie straight across). Continue to Forest Moor and turn L on to Gated bridle path. At end turn L to A59 then 1st R to Fewston Farm Shop café. L out of café L at next junction downhill and R up to B6451. Turn R, continue to Bland Hill where L up to Little Almscliffe, Beckwithshaw and Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride -Helen & Keith Tate

Littlethorpe, Marton-le-Moor, Boroughbridge 36miles. Flat.

Greenway to Ripley, Markington, Second left in Markington and over the A61 to Bishop Monkton. Littlethorpe, Turn R on B6265 and after crossing river take next L to Copt Hewick. R in Copt Hewick, R at T junction and R again to Marton-le-Moor.L in Marton to cross over A1(M) Turn R and next R to Kirby Hill. At T junction turn L. Optional coffee stop Listers, return via Boroughbridge, Staveley and Knaresborough.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough Low Bridge, Farnham, Copgrove, bridlepath towards Roecliffe, and turn R under the A1(M) and into Boroughbridge. L in Boroughbridge up to the roundabout where turn R. L to Langthorpe and Skelton. At B6265 L past Ripon Racecourse. L over canal bridge (before you get to Ripon bypass) and into Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Occaney, Farnham, Lingerfield, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Route 107 Markington, Boroughbridge, Whixley, Spofforth, 46 miles.Flat.

Hornbeam, Knox, Hampsthwaite, Clint, Shaw Mills, Bishop Thornton, Markington, Bishop Monkton, Roecliffe, Boroughbridge. (Café.) York Road, R at X roads and L to Marton cum Grafton. L, R on B6265 and L to Great Ouseburn. Thorpe Underwood, over B6265, L and straight along Rudgate. Cross A59. Cattal, Hunsingore, Walshford, A168, R on Ox Close Lane, Little Ribston, Spofforth (or Knaresborough), Harrogate.

Route 59 Fewston, 26 miles. Some hills.

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Little Alms Cliff, down hill to B6451, R and first L down to Swinsty and Fewston reservoir. Cross bridge and straight on keeping reservoir on L, until crossing longer bridge across reservoir. Up hill to car park and loos). Take L fork and climb steadily for a mile through Timble. First R back down to reservoir and cross back over bridge. Take 1st L and head back to B6451. Pennypot Lane and Harrogate.

Cobby Syke Road, Meagill Lane, Menwith, Staupes 28 miles. Hilly.

Squinting Cat, Little Almscliffe, R along Watson’s Lane. R at T junction to pass the Sun Inn.  L down Wydra Lane, at top of hill turn R on Cobby Sike Road (past Farm Shop Café) . L at T junc with A59 (caution – fast traffic!) then R on Meagill Lane. Turn R at Greenhow Hill Road and R again on Menwith Hill Road, past Menwith Base then 1st R. Look out for and take L turn signed Kettlesing. R on Staupes Road (signed Kettlesing and Birstwith). Cross over a road junction to Crow Hill Lane. R down unsignposted lane (caution – Pot Holes!).  L at junction with Back Lane to Clapham Green then R to Hampsthwaite (Cafe) Return to Harrogate along Hollins Lane to Killinghall and Knox Bridge.

Hornbeam, The Greenway, Ripley, out on Pateley road and 1st  R up to Drovers Crossroads, straight on to Raventofts Hall and R along Watergate Lane. Straight on  and then down to Fountains Abbey and uphill to the Visitor Centre entrance. Through Studley Park to Studley Roger and R into Ripon. Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium ride – Lead agreed on the day

Route 114 Burton Leonard, Markington, Hampsthwaite. 26 miles. Some hills.

From Hornbeam to Knaresborough, Farnham and L at Copgrove. Keep going through Burton Leonard, follow sign L to Wormald Green. At A61 L down hill, and cross (Care!) to Markington. Follow road all way to Bishop Thornton, Shaw Mills, up hill to Clint and L to Hampsthwaite. Cafe. Up Hollins Lane as usual, but at top take R (Chain Bar Lane) to A59. L for short distance and R at roundabout. Almost immediately L onto footpath into Jennyfield estate. Heather Way to end, cross over and follow path to Tansy Road, R into Crowberry Road and L along Jenny Field Drive cycle path. Cross A61 at crossing, Coppice Gate, follow cycle sign R to Luchon Way, L on Coppice Drive, straight over into Studley Road. At end follow path L through houses, which comes out at top of Franklin Road, straight on over railway bridge footpath (dismount), R into Dragon Road, Dragon Parade, East Parade, and usual route back to Hornbeam.

Hornbeam, Harrogate Showground, Follifoot, Spofforth, L to Little Ribston, R and  then L over A1, Cowthorpe, Tockwith, Marston Moor Memorial, Long Marston, Hutton Wandesley, Angram, Askham Richard, Bilbrough, Catterton, Healaugh, Wighill, Wetherby (café), Spofforth, Follifoot, Rudding Park, Showground, Harrogate.
