Wheel Easy Ride Calendar

Wheel Easy rides start at Hornbeam Park railway station every Sunday and Wednesday, leaving at 9.30am, except the EG’s ride which meets on Wednesdays at Low Bridge, Knaresborough, and leaves at 10.00am. Lengths of rides vary according to the weather and season. Most rides have a coffee and/or lunch stop. Please arrive in good time. For ride descriptions click here.

All rides trying to arrive in Ripon at approximately 2pm for afternoon tea at Spa Gardens. Routes home may vary and to be decided on the day as there are many options.

 

Short Ride                   Meet at Hornbeam at 12-00

Hornbeam to Knaresborough (12-20) via the shortest route. Bond End at Knaresborough to Boroughbridge Road. Anyone who does not want to do the full distance can meet the group at Conyingham Hall or further along Boroughbridge Road. From Boroughbridge Road to Farnham, Copgrove, Bishop Monkton (Sports Ground 12-50), Littlethorpe, Ripon Spa Gardens and back via Bishop MOnkton, Markington, Drovers, Greenway.

Medium Ride               Meet at Hornbeam at 10.30

Copgrove, Boroughbridge, Skelton, Ripon, Littlethorpe, Lingerfield, 35 miles

Hornbeam, Knaresborough Low Bridge, Farnham, Copgrove, bridlepath towards Roecliffe, and turn R under the A1(M) and into Boroughbridge(cafe). L in Boroughbridge up to the roundabout where turn R. L to Langthorpe and Skelton. At B6265 L past Ripon Racecourse and through Ripon to Spa Gardens.

Return via Littlethorpe Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Occaney, Farnham, Lingerfield, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium Ride               Meet at Hornbeam at 10:30

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, Ouseburn, Dunsforths, Aldborough  Boroughbridge (cafe). In Boroughbridge cross river to roundabout and head north towards Dishforth. At T junction just to S of airfield turn L and cross A1(M) to Marton-le-Moor where turn R to Marrow Flatts Farm. Turn L, passing through Sharow into Ripon (Spa Gardens).

Return via Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Markington,  Ripley, Greenway, Harrogate. (alternative Burton Leonard, Mountgarret Estate, Nidd, Ripley)

Medium Ride               Meet at Hornbeam at 10:30

Brimham, Dallowgill Moor, Ripon, 44 miles. Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley, Hollybank Woods, Clint. L at B6165 towards Burnt Yates. Take R fork signposted Brimham Rocks, R at X roads to Brimham Rocks. L on B6265, down hill and first R, then first R up onto Dallowgill Moor, R towards Grantley. L in Grantley and R to Low Grantley and continue to B6265. L and R onto Moor Lane. L into Studley Park (café at Visitor Centre). Continue along Church Walk, R through gate down through Deer Park. Ripon (café at Spa Gardens).

Home via Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium Plus Ride     Meet at Hornbeam at 9:30

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Arkendale, Marton, Great Ouseburn, Aldwark Bridge, right to Newton-on-Ouse, left to Tollerton, Alne, Easingwold,  Coffee stop, Raskelf, Brafferton, right to Cundall, left to Norton-le-Clay, Marton-le-Moor, right to Marrow Flatts Farm, left to Sharrow and into Ripon and Spa Gardens. Hornbeam, Knox Bridge, Hampsthwaite, Shaw Mills, Bishop Thornton, Fountains, Aldfield, Winksley, Kirkby Malzeard, Grewelthorpe, Masham, (depending on time additional loop to take in Ellingstring and Jervaulux) Thornton Watlass, Snape, Carthorpe, Kirklington, Wath, Nunwick, Ripon Spa Gardens.

Route 148A Risplith, Brimham, Hampsthwaite, 34 miles. (Avoiding steep hill)

Hornbeam, Claro Road, Dragon Bridge, Greenway. Through Ripley to B6165, R up Scarah Bank, straight on at Drovers X roads, R down Watergate Lane and at end turn L [ie not down to Fountains], take first R to Sawley. Follow through village to B6265. Turn R to  Risplith (café). Return to Sawley junction but stay straight on on B6265. After 2 miles or so turn L to Brimham. Past rocks, L at cross roads and R down Stripe Lane. L at bottom on B6165, first R to Hartwith toll bridge, L to Birstwith. L just before shops onto Wreaks Road and continue up Clint Bank to junction, R onto Clint Bank Road and L on Hollybank Lane to Ripley, Nidderdale Greenway back to Harrogate

Medium Plus ride - Volunteer Needed

Aldwark, Easingwold, Coxwold, Hutton Sessay, 58 miles.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, L on A168 and R to Marton. R on B6265 and L to Great Ouseburn. Turn L to cross Aldwark Bridge, straight on to Youlton, Alne, Alne Station, Easingwold (café) Follow cycle route out of Easingwold but go straight on where the cycle route goes L. Take 2 L turns to  Oulston. Continue to Newburgh Priory and Coxwold (café). Straight on through Coxwold, past church and continue until L turn to Carlton Husthwaite. R and over A19 to  Hutton Sessay, Little Sessay, Pilmoor,  R at T junction towards Cundall but soon L at Thornton Bridge to Milby, Boroughbridge, Minskip, Stavely, Farnham, Knaresborough, Hornbeam.

Leave Tadcaster on A659, south west, passing brewery on left to traffic lights, turn left A162
1.25mls turn left B1223 through Ulleskelf, Ryther, Cawood & Wistow to Selby.
Morrisons located on side roads south of Abbey.
Return to Abbey turn rt. A19 to cross swing bridge.
Follow A19 east past flour mills to roundabout & turn left, SP Barlby.
0.25 mile at Highfield View turn right SP (A63).
At roundabout take 2nd exit A63 Osgodby & Howden.
250yds., after slight right, turn left on Sand Lane to Osgodby.
Follow SP South Duffield (Care left @ Xrds 100yds)
Enter South Duffield @ telephone box & pump, turn right SP Menthorpe.
0.5ml turn left SP Menthorpe & approx 1 ml turn left SP North Duffield & Menthorpe.
Approach North Duffield carefully crossing A163 @ staggered Xrd.
Follow side road swinging left & keeping right @ village green to Skipwith.
Leaving Skipwith, staying right past church, around right hand bend, turn right SP Thorganby.
Follow road through to Wheldrake towards Crockey Hill (leading to York).

Strawberry Fields café (A19).

South on A19 for 300m, turn right Howden Lane. After 1M join cycle path North direction York.

Right turn immediately after going under A64, follow cycle path to racecourse, across Bishopthorpe Road, first right down snicket (or ginnel), onto riverside path. Head North (Left). Straight over at Station Road and continue on riverside; up and over river at railway bridge, continuing North up riverside.

Continue to Shipton then Left to Beningbrough, Newton-on-Ouse, Aldwark, Ouseburn, Dunsforths, Aldborough, Boroughbridge, Roecliffe.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough Low Bridge, Farnham, Copgrove, bridlepath towards Roecliffe, and turn R under the A1(M) and into Boroughbridge. L in Boroughbridge up to the roundabout where turn R. L over canal bridge (before you get to Ripon bypass) and into Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Occaney, Farnham, Lingerfield, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride – Declan Malone & Alan Rawet

Route 197 Pateley Bridge, Yorke’s Folly and Brimham, 40 miles (hilly)

Hornbeam, Stainburn Moor, L just after Pennypot turn off L then R at Cobby Syke to A59. L and next R on A59. R at bridle path through Naval Base then L up Delves Ridge. Go past the Stonehouse Inn and then take the next R at Braithwaite Lane. L at T junction and follow road down Yorke’s Folly and towards Teacups cafe. Cross Greenhow road and continue in same direction up to Wath. Turn R over the bridge then turn left up the steep hill (Beware of the deep drainage gulleys across the full width of the road) and turn L at top. R to Fellbeck, L on B6265 the next R towards Brimham but take L turn to Rabbit Farm, Raventofts Hall, Drovers X roads, Ripley and Harrogate.

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Ferrensby, Arkendale, cross over A1 and turn L and 1st R towards Marton, B6265 turn R, 1st L to Great Ouseburn, L to cross Aldwark Bridge, turn R to Linton on Ouse, Newton on Ouse, Beningborough (café at Farm Shop). Return over Aldwark Bridge, L to Thorpe Underwood, Whixley, over A59 to Cattal, R to Hunsingore, Walshford, Little Ribston. Then via Knaresborough or Spofforth and back to Harrogate. (Shorter route – go straight from Great Ouseburn to Thorpe Underwood)

Medium Plus ride – Sue Couture, Michael Inglis

Route 205 Bolton Percy, Solar System, Tockwith, 54 miles. (mainly flat)

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby Overblow, Wetherby, cycle track to Thorp Arch, R to Wighill, R towards Tadcaster but straight on to Oxton and Bolton Percy. Turn R at Appleton Roebuck then L across the airfield. R and along the river by Acaster Malbis and turn sharp R on to the York – Selby cycle track where turn L (in York direction) and passing under the A64 to the sun and Tesco. Follow the cycle track along the side of the A1036, then A64 away from York (and Tesco), then take the slip road to the roundabout following signs towards Askham Bryan  then L to Askam Richard. Follow road through Angram, Long Marston, Tockwith, Cowthorpe, over A1(M) and R to Little Ribston, L to Spofforth, Follifoot, Rudding, Showground, Hornbeam.

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Stainburn, R on B6451and L to Fewston, Timble, L along Askwith Moor Road, R to Askwith, L to Weston (Cockpit Farm).Approaching Otley, Turn L at T junction past the Yew Tree Inn. 1st R and follow road round. R on to Crossways, follow road round past Wrenbeck newsagents, then R up to junction with Farnley Lane and turn L up B6451 towards Farnley, L to Farnley, R opposite the school. Follow this road Then take 1st L uphill. 1st L again and along gated road up to gate to Stainburn Woods. Through the woods and R into Harrogate. 

Medium Plus ride – Helen & Keith Tate

Route 62 Bramhope and Otley, 45 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby Overblow. Short stretch A61 to Harewood Bridge where turn R. L up Weardley Road to Eccup. Next R to Blackhill Farm then L and R up to A660 where turn R towards Bramhope. L to Old Bramhope and cross A658 to the Chevin.
Drop down to Otley (café). Return from Otley via Leathley or Castley to Harrogate.

Bramham, Thorner Thorp Arch 34 miles (flat)

Hornbeam, Burnbridge, Kirkby Overblow, Sicklinghall, Wetherby, through town to A1 cycle path, follow cycle path to Boston Spa roundabout. Cross Collingham road to pick up side road heading towards Bramham. At T junction, turn R into Thorner Road. At T junction just after Holme Farm, L to Thorner. In village take L to Bramham. Cross A1 bridge and into Bramham. L to Clifford, Boston Spa, L over river  and R  to Thorpe Arch[café], Wetherby[café], Little Ribston, Spofforth, Follifoot, Rudding Park, Showground, Hornbeam.

Medium Plus ride – Monica & David Webber

Route 196 Kirkby Malzeard, and around the Moors to Masham, 53 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley, up bank to Drovers X roads and  go straight on. R down Watergate Lane to Fountains Abbey visitor centre (café). Back L at Visitor Centre roundabout and turn  R then L to Aldfield, L then R at B6265 to  Low Grantley, Laverton,  Kirkby Malzeard, Grewelthorpe and  lane from top of village west to top of moors, follow edge of moors (views), drop down past Swinton Hall and golf club to Masham.  Cafe stop. Leave Masham over bridge follow Main Ripon Road short way then L up hill on B6267, 3 miles R to West Tanfield, Wath, Hutton Conyers, Ripon, Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Markington, Drovers Xroads, Ripley, Return along Greenway to Harrogate.

Route 100 Timble, Blubberhouses, Thruscross, 30 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam. Usual route to Timble, but at main road turn R to Blubberhouses. Cross straight over A59 and up some steep hills. R on Reservoir Road, continue to Stone House pub, straight over down Harper Lane, R to Thornthwaite, continue to B6451, L to Darley, R along Main Street, continue to Birstwith, up hill to Clapham Green, down to Hampsthwaite (cafe), back to Harrogate. (Or from Birstwith up to Clint and Greenway back to Harrogate.)

Alternative straight on at Reservoir Road and continue round the top of the reservoir to the T junction, turn R (heading back towards Blubberhouses) and L on Delves Ridge. Straight on past Menwith Hill until Meg Gate where you turn R to Clapham Green and down to Hampsthwaite. Slightly longer but less hilly!

Medium Plus ride – Liz Frederiksen, Dave Siswick

Route 41 Vale of York to Easingwold, 50 miles. (Mainly flat)

Hornbeam, Knaresborough Low Bridge, Farnham, Ferrensby, Arkendale. L on A168 and 1st R past Marton. R on B6265 and 1st L to Great Ouseburn.  Through Ouseburn, L to cross Aldwark Bridge, L towards Aldwark Manor. Follow signs for Alne and pick up cycle route 65 to Easingwold. At roundabout turn R and then take L into town centre for café. Reverse route out of town and head towards Raskelf then Helperby. In Helperby turn R to Thornton Bridge. Cross the river and turn L towards and into Boroughbridge. Return any route

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, L and R on A168, Marton, R and L on B6265 to Great Ouseburn, L to Aldwark Toll Bridge. L to Aldwark, L to Flawith and keep L to Myton-on-Swale (plaque about site of battle by the bridlepath bridge). Back to junction turn L and keep turning L to Brafferton and Thornton Bridge. Turn L and follow road to Boroughbridge (cafe). Back to Harrogate via Minskip, Staveley and Knaresborough. (Short route - go direct from Great Ouseburn to Boroughbridge via the Dunsforths)

Medium Plus ride –  Gia Margolis, Debby Hollings

Route 135 Bolton Abbey, Stumps Cross, Askwith, 55 miles.

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Little Almscliff, R at T Junction. Across A59, pass Menwith Hill on R.H. side. L at crossroads on Menwith Hill Road. At end turn R and follow road to Greenhow. At T-junction turn L and follow sign to Stump Cross (café). Next L through Skyreholme and continue south to Barden Bridge where turn L towards Storiths but cross over pedestrian bridge at Cavendish Pavilion. Go L to Bolton Bridge and follow cycle track that crosses over A59 and heads for Beamsley and then leads straight on to Ilkley. Stay on north side of river and continue in an easterly direction to Askwith and Otley. Follow main road to Pool then R to Castley, Weeton, Kirby Overblow, and to Harrogate

Route 191 Fountains Abbey, Ripon, Littlethorpe. 30miles. (Hilly)

Hornbeam, The Greenway, Ripley, out on Pateley road and 1st  R up to Drovers Crossroads, straight on to Raventofts Hall and R along Watergate Lane. Straight on  and then down to Fountains Abbey and uphill to the Visitor Centre entrance. Through Studley Park to Studley Roger and R into Ripon. Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride – Peter Jackson,

Route 204 York, Beningbrough, Marston Moor, 57 miles. (fairly flat)

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale. Over A1(M) and L on A168 then R past Marton to B6265. R then L to Great Ouseburn. L after Ouseburn to Aldwark Bridge.
Cross Aldwark Bridge and turn R and follow the signs through Linton (café by river) and Newton-on-Ouse to Beningborough Hall. (Farm Shop cafe). Leaving the Hall continue south on Sustrans Route 65 to York City Centre along by the Ouse.
Cross to R bank of Ouse and continue past Rowntree Park to the Millenium Bridge. Shortly after the path turns R up to road, turn L and almost immediately R to Knavesmire racecourse. Follow path over the Knavesmire, eventually past the Sun sculpture, taking the R fork and ultimately come to the A64 near Tesco. Cycle path goes alongside road for a couple of miles and goes up to roundabout. Go across, towards Askham Bryan and take L to Askham Richard. Through village and L to Long Marston. Continue in same direction for Marston Moor, Tockwith, Cowthorpe, over the A1(M), eventually meeting the B6164 where turn R and then L in Little Ribston following the signs to Spofforth. R to Follifoot and back via Rudding Park to Harrogate.

Medium ride – 

Route 21 Tadcaster, 38miles. Mainly flat.

Hornbeam, Burnbridge, Kirby Overblow, Sicklinghall, Linton, Collingham, Bramham, straight on towards Tadcaster, take 2nd R, head over dual carriage way towards Sutton. Just before Sutton, turn L to Tadcaster, recrossing A64, and at main road turn R and go past brewery.
Cross over river & turn 1st L to Wighill. Just before entering Wighill turn L towards Walton. Pass through Thorp Arch Trading estate and join cycle path back to Wetherby.
Return to Harrogate via Spofforth and Follifoot. (cafes at Tadcaster, Thorp Arch or Wetherby)

(Short route – At Bramham turn L and follow the cycle path next to A1(M) into Wetherby)

Medium Plus ride –  Michael Inglis, Peter Lawley

Route 102 Brimham, Dallowgill Moor, Ripon, 44 miles. (hilly)

L on B6265, down hill and first R, then first R up onto Dallowgill Moor, R towards Grantley. L in Grantley and R to Low Grantley and continue to B6265. L and R onto Moor Lane. L into Studley Park (café at Visitor Centre). Continue along Church Walk, R through gate down through Deer Park. Ripon (café at Spa Gardens). Home via Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.
