Wheel Easy Ride Calendar

Wheel Easy rides start at Hornbeam Park railway station every Sunday and Wednesday, leaving at 9.30am, except the EG’s ride which meets on Wednesdays at Low Bridge, Knaresborough, and leaves at 10.00am. Lengths of rides vary according to the weather and season. Most rides have a coffee and/or lunch stop. Please arrive in good time. For ride descriptions click here.

Short/Beginners ride - Volunteer Needed

Medium ride – Julie Wilkins

Route 164 Beningborough loop, 40miles. Mostly flat.

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Ferrensby, Arkendale, cross over A1 and turn L and 1st R towards Marton, B6265 turn R, 1st L to Great Ouseburn, L to cross Aldwark Bridge, turn R to Linton on Ouse, Newton on Ouse, Beningborough (café at Farm Shop). Return over Aldwark Bridge, L to Thorpe Underwood, Whixley (Café at Tancred Farm), over A59 to Cattal, R to Hunsingore, Walshford, Little Ribston. Then via Knaresborough or Spofforth and back to Harrogate. (Shorter route – go straight from Great Ouseburn to Thorpe Underwood)

Medium Plus ride – Chris Rogers, James Grimshaw

Route 205 Bolton Percy, Solar System, Tockwith, 54 miles. (mainly flat)

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby Overblow, Wetherby, cycle track to Thorp Arch, R to Wighill, R towards Tadcaster but straight on to Oxton and Bolton Percy. Turn R at Appleton Roebuck then L across the airfield. R and along the river by Acaster Malbis and turn sharp R on to the York – Selby cycle track where turn L (in York direction) and passing under the A64 to the sun and Tesco. Follow the cycle track along the side of the A1036, then A64 away from York (and Tesco), then take the slip road to the roundabout following signs towards Askham Bryan  then L to Askam Richard. Follow road through Angram, Long Marston, Tockwith, Cowthorpe, over A1(M) and R to Little Ribston, L to Spofforth, Follifoot, Rudding, Showground, Hornbeam.

Fountains

Gentle local ride on farm tracks and minor roads, with a café stop.

You don’t need a mountain bike, a hybrid or tourer will do fine.... preferably not a road bike with 23mm tyres and fag-paper clearances, but somebody is sure to ride one just to make me wrong.

Bring a drink and a biscuit, a sense of balance and most importantly a sense of humour.

Route 175 Timble, Cockpit Farm , Otley, Lindley Wood Reservoir, 30 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Stainburn, R on B6451and L to Fewston, Timble, L along Askwith Moor Road, R to Askwith, L to Weston (Cockpit Farm).Approaching Otley, Turn L at T junction past the Yew Tree Inn. 1st R and follow road round. R on to Crossways, follow road round past Wrenbeck newsagents, then R up to junction with Farnley Lane and turn L up B6451 towards Farnley, L to Farnley, R opposite the school. Follow this road Then take 1st L uphill. 1st L again and along gated road up to gate to Stainburn Woods. Through the woods and R into Harrogate. 

Medium Plus ride – Gia Margolis, Steve Wright

Route 62 Bramhope and Otley, 45 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby Overblow. Short stretch A61 to Harewood Bridge where turn R. L up Weardley Road to Eccup. Next R to Blackhill Farm then L and R up to A660 where turn R towards Bramhope. L to Old Bramhope and cross A658 to the Chevin.
Drop down to Otley (café). Return from Otley via Leathley or Castley to Harrogate.

Dacre, Padside Hampsthwaite 34 miles, hilly. 

Greenway to Ripley, Holly Bank lane to Clint, Birstwith, Darley, Dacre. L onto Dacre Lane and straight on at Padside up to the StoneHouse pub. L onto Greenhow Hill Road, L onto Menwith Hill Road, R onto Sleights Lane, L onto Tang Road, Hampsthwaite via Swincliffe Lane. Café stop at Sophies. Home via Ripley and the Greenway or up Hampsthwaite High Street, L on Rowden Lane, across A59 then L at Pennypot Lane crossing Oak Beck and up to Otley Road. 

Medium Plus ride – Monica & David Webber

Route 47 Jill's Hills, 50miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, North Rigton, Stainburn, Leathley, Otley, Askwith, Middleton, Langbar, Beamsley, Ilkley (café), Otley and return to Harrogate via Weeton, Dunkeswick and Kirkby Overblow.

Short/Beginners ride - Volunteer Needed

Medium ride – Dave Marson

Route 100 Timble, Blubberhouses, Thruscross, 30 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam. Usual route to Timble, but at main road turn R to Blubberhouses. Cross straight over A59 and up some steep hills. R on Reservoir Road, continue to Stone House pub, straight over down Harper Lane, R to Thornthwaite, continue to B6451, L to Darley, R along Main Street, continue to Birstwith, up hill to Clapham Green, down to Hampsthwaite (cafe), back to Harrogate. (Or from Birstwith up to Clint and Greenway back to Harrogate.)

Alternative straight on at Reservoir Road and continue round the top of the reservoir to the T junction, turn R (heading back towards Blubberhouses) and L on Delves Ridge. Straight on past Menwith Hill until Meg Gate where you turn R to Clapham Green and down to Hampsthwaite. Slightly longer but less hilly!

Medium Plus ride - Sue Couture, Peter Jackson

Thirsk 54 miles. Fairly flat.

Knaresborough, Farnham, Staveley, Minskip, Boroughbridge, Thornton Bridge, Sessay, Dalton, Sowerby, Thirsk - return same route to Dalton, Topcliffe, Asenby, Cundall, Norton Le Clay, Boroughbridge, back to Harrogate by same route as outward. (Possible café Yorks of Thirsk on the Market Place)

Littlethorpe, Marton-le-Moor, Boroughbridge 36miles. Fairly flat.

Greenway to Ripley, Markington, Second left in Markington and over the A61 to Bishop Monkton. Littlethorpe, Turn R on B6265 and after crossing river take next L to Copt Hewick. R in Copt Hewick, R at T junction and R again to Marton-le-Moor.L in Marton to cross over A1(M) Turn R and next R to Kirby Hill. At T junction turn L.Optional coffee stop Listers, return via Boroughbridge, Staveley and Knaresborough approx. 36miles. (NOTE various options to shorten route if necessary)

Medium Plus ride – Liz Frederiksen, Volunteer Needed

Route 135 Stumps Cross, Bolton Abbey, Askwith, 55 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Beckwithshaw, Little Almscliff, R at T Junction. Across A59, pass Menwith Hill on R.H. side. L at crossroads on Menwith Hill Road. At end turn R and follow road to Greenhow. At T-junction turn L and follow sign to Stump Cross (café). Next L through Skyreholme and continue south to Barden Bridge where turn L towards Storiths but cross over pedestrian bridge at Cavendish Pavilion. Go L to Bolton Bridge and follow cycle track that crosses over A59 and heads for Beamsley and then leads straight on to Ilkley. Stay on north side of river and continue in an easterly direction to Askwith and Otley. Follow main road to Pool then R to Castley, Weeton, Kirby Overblow, and to Harrogate.

Short/Beginners ride - Volunteer Needed

Medium ride – Volunteer Needed

Route 191 Fountains Abbey, Ripon, Littlethorpe. 30miles. (Hilly)

Hornbeam, The Greenway, Ripley, out on Pateley road and 1st  R up to Drovers Crossroads, straight on to Raventofts Hall and R along Watergate Lane. Straight on  and then down to Fountains Abbey and uphill to the Visitor Centre entrance. Through Studley Park to Studley Roger and R into Ripon. Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride – Helen & Keith Tate, Volunteer Needed

Route 204 Beningbrough, York, Marston Moor, 57 miles. (Fairly flat)

Hornbeam, Low Bridge Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale. Over A1(M) and L on A168 then R past Marton to B6265. R then L to Great Ouseburn. L after Ouseburn to Aldwark Bridge.
Cross Aldwark Bridge and turn R and follow the signs through Linton (café by river) and Newton-on-Ouse to Beningborough Hall. (Farm Shop cafe). Leaving the Hall continue south on Sustrans Route 65 to York City Centre along by the Ouse.
Cross to R bank of Ouse and continue past Rowntree Park to the Millenium Bridge. Shortly after the path turns R up to road, turn L and almost immediately R to Knavesmire racecourse. Follow path over the Knavesmire, eventually past the Sun sculpture, taking the R fork and ultimately come to the A64 near Tesco. Cycle path goes alongside road for a couple of miles and goes up to roundabout. Go across, towards Askham Bryan and take L to Askham Richard. Through village and L to Long Marston. Continue in same direction for Marston Moor, Tockwith, Cowthorpe, over the A1(M), eventually meeting the B6164 where turn R and then L in Little Ribston following the signs to Spofforth. R to Follifoot and back via Rudding Park to Harrogate.

Short/Beginners ride - 

Medium ride – 

Route 21 Tadcaster, 38miles. Mainly flat.

Hornbeam, Burnbridge, Kirby Overblow, Sicklinghall, Linton, Collingham, Bramham. Ignore L turn to Bramham centre, next L at far end of Bramham and R at the next junction.

Take 2nd R, head over dual carriage way towards Sutton. Just before Sutton, turn L to Tadcaster, recrossing A64, and at main road turn R and go past brewery.
Cross over river & turn 1st L to Wighill. Just before entering Wighill turn L towards Walton. Pass through Thorp Arch Trading estate and join cycle path back to Wetherby.
Return to Harrogate via Spofforth and Follifoot. (cafes at Tadcaster, Thorp Arch or Wetherby)

(Short route – At Bramham turn L and follow the cycle path next to A1(M) into Wetherby)

Medium Plus ride – 

Route 102 Brimham, Dallowgill Moor, Ripon, 44 miles. (hilly)

Hornbeam, Greenway, Ripley, Hollybank Woods, Clint. L at B6165 towards Burnt Yates. Take R fork signposted Brimham Rocks, R at X roads to Brimham Rocks. L on B6265, down hill and first R, then first R up onto Dallowgill Moor, R towards Grantley. L in Grantley and R to Low Grantley and continue to B6265. L and R onto Moor Lane. L into Studley Park (café at Visitor Centre). Continue along Church Walk, R through gate down through Deer Park. Ripon (café at Spa Gardens). Home via Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Copgrove, Farnham, Knaresborough, Harrogate.

Short/Beginners ride - 

Medium ride – 

Route 165, Birstwith, Brimham Rocks, Sawley, 32 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Ripley, Hollybank Woods, Clint Bank Lane, Birstwith. Cross Hartwith Toll Bridge and turn L on Pateley Bridge road. 1st R up Stripe Lane, L at T junction (Fiddlers Green) and R to Brimham Rocks. Straight on to B6265 where turn R. Next R on narrow lane to Sawley. R at Sawley and L at T junction towards Fountains. At next T junction turn R up past How Hill and follow road to Watergate. L and past the Drovers X roads to Ripley and Harrogate.

(Cafe at Risplith turn L at Sawley to main road and a few yards on R. Retrace route back to Sawley.  Alternate climb up to Fountains Visitor Centre, or Ripley.)

Medium Plus ride - 

Route 211 Aldwark, Easingwold, Coxwold, Hutton Sessay, 58 miles. Fairly flat.

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Arkendale, L on A168 and R to Marton. R on B6265 and L to Great Ouseburn. Turn L to cross Aldwark Bridge, straight on to Youlton, Alne, Alne Station, Easingwold (café) Follow cycle route out of Easingwold but go straight on where the cycle route goes L. Take 2 L turns to  Oulston. Continue to Newburgh Priory and Coxwold (café). Straight on through Coxwold, past church and continue until L turn to Carlton Husthwaite. R and over A19 to  Hutton Sessay, Little Sessay, Pilmoor,  R at T junction towards Cundall but soon L at Thornton Bridge to Milby, Boroughbridge, Minskip, Stavely, Farnham, Knaresborough, Hornbeam.

Short/Beginners ride - 

Medium ride – 

Route 43 to Harewood and Eccup, 33 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Leadhall Lane, Church Lane, Pannal, cross Leeds Road.
R up Drury Lane. R then L on by pass. Kirkby Overblow. R at Shoulder of Mutton, R down steep hill to A61.  Turn L to Harewood Bridge.
Over bridge and turn R to Pool. L to Weardley. Up steep hill and pass New Inn on LHS. Turn L at Village Road and keep L to Eccup reservoir.
Over dam and exit on Harrogate- Leeds Road.
Cross to Manor Lane and up behind Grammar School and out on to Wigton Lane.
At end turn L and follow road all way through East Keswick until T junction at end. Turn R and continue along Harewood Road to Collingham Primary School. Turn L along Linton Road to Sicklinghall Road and into Wetherby (Cafe). Return along cycle track or Little Ribston to Spofforth then Follifoot, Rudding Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride 

Route 178 Ulleskelf, Cawood, Riccall, 62miles. Fairly flat.

(Mostly Flat) Hornbeam, Burn Bridge, Kirkby  Overblow, Northgate Lane to Linton, Collingham, cross A58, Jewitt Lane to Thorner Lane, L to Bramham, through village and up to Toulson Lane, York Lane, R to High Moor Grange Farm, cross A659, cross A64 to Stutton. R on A162, L B1223 to Ulleskelf, L to Ryther, Cawood, L across river, R to Kelfield, and continue to Riccall (possible lunch stop at Greyhound Inn or Mrs B’s Kitchen just before Cawood, or the Waterfront at Naburn Marina). Turn L at Selby/York railway track (on the eastern side of Riccall), Tesco, Askam Bryan, Healaugh, Wighill, Thorpe Arch, Wetherby and cycle path to Spofforth, Follifoot, Rudding Park, Showground and Harrogate.

Route 17 Boroughbridge Great Ouseburn Ferrensby Knaresborough, 35 miles, mainly flat

Hornbeam, Knaresborough, Farnham, Burton Leonard, Bishop Monkton, R to Roecliffe, Boroughbridge (café ), Aldborough, Lower Dunsforth, and Upper Dunsforth, Great Ouseburn, Arkendale, Ferrensby, Farnham, Knaresborough,  (café), Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride –

Route 212 Grassington, Appletreewick, Bolton Abbey, Ilkley, Otley, 64 miles. Hilly.

Hornbeam, Squinting Cat, Beckwithshaw, Menwith Hill, Duck Street, Greenhow, turn L onto B6265, Stump Cross Caverns, Dibble's Bridge (long steep descent!), Grassington (Café), Threshfield, Burnsall, Appletreewick, cross River Wharfe on wooden footbridge at Cavendish Pavilion, Bolton Abbey , Beamsley, Ilkley, Askwith, Weston (Cock Pit Farm Tea Rooms), Otley, and then return to Harrogate via Farnley, Leathley or Castley/Dunkeswick. 3,000' ascent.

Route 23A Fountains Abbey via Shaw Mills (36 miles) Hilly.

Hornbeam, Greenway, Hollybank Lane. R to Clint, R towards Burnt Yates but straight across at X roads to Shaw Mills, Bishop Thornton. L turn towards Sawley, R on to Watergate Lane and then down to Fountains Abbey and up hill to the Visitor Centre entrance.
Return through Ripon to Littlethorpe, Bishop Monkton, Burton Leonard and through the Mountgarret estate. (Cross bridge , R at T junction, L at next T junction, R at end, R at Nidd then L on A61) Ripley, Greenway, Harrogate.

Medium Plus ride 

Route 56 Ilkley, 45 miles. Hilly. 

Hornbeam, Squinting Cat, Beckwithshaw, Little Alms Cliff, R at T junction. L to Swinsty and Fewston. Up through Timble. L onto Askwith Moor Road. R down to Askwith. R at T junction and follow road to Ilkley (cafes). Return via Askwith and Otley. B6451 from Otley to Farnley .and Leathley. At Leathley L and then R to Stainburn. Continue to Almscliffe Crags, North Rigton, Brackenthwaite Lane, Burnbridge, Hornbeam.
