Route 73: Malham (87 miles)

Route Map One of the best Wheel Easy rides through the world famous Malham scenery, but its also one of our biggest challenges as there are hills on the way there, bigger hills in the middle, and still more hills on the way back. You just can't avoid them!

Hornbeam Park, Beckwithshaw, Little Almscliffe, Menwith Hill, Duck Street, Greenhow, Stump Cross caverns, beware the fast long descent with the steep bend across Dibbles Bridge, Grassington for Cobblestones Cafe. Take the minor road out of Grassington towards Kettlewell, but turn left in Conistone to cross the River Wharfe, then right past Kilnsey Crag. Bear left at Skirfare Bridge following the road up Littondale to Arncliffe, turn left at signpost for Malham. Then climb! At the cross roads near Malham Tarn, the roads straight ahead and left both go to Malham village. Both will give you magnificent views, but which is best? You'll just have to try the other road next time to find out! Beware the very steep descents into Malham village. There are possible cafe stops here. Continue straight on to Kirkby Malham, and Airton. The farm shop on the right before Airton has a coffee shop with a good reputation. Turn left in Airton, cross the River Aire to Calton, Winterburn, Hetton and Cracoe. At the end of Cracoe, where the main road turns left, go straight ahead onto the minor road to Thorpe and Burnsall (cafe). We're now back in the familiar territory of wonderful Wharfedale for the ride back through Appletreewick, across the wooden bridge to Cavendish Pavilion (cafe), Bolton Abbey (cafe), use the cycle path to cross under the A59 at Bolton Bridge, then Beamsley, Ilkley (cafes), Askwith, Weston (cafe), Otley (cafes), Leathley, Stainburn, Almscliff Crag, North Rigton, Brackenthwaite, Burn Bridge (pub!), Hornbeam Park. 87 miles Alternatively the ride could start and finish at Beckwithshaw for an 80 mile circuit. An early start is recommended. EW
