Awayday Rides 2018

The idea of the Awayday rides is to experience areas of the country which are outside the reach of our normal day rides from Harrogate. These rides are often on country lanes which most of us are unfamiliar with and as such we need to take greater care in organising the ride. We have reviewed last years programme and have made a few changes to how the Awayday rides for 2018 will be run. Therefore

we have set out how we plan to manage the programme this year below:-

Registering your Interest

We will not be putting all the Awayday ride details on the club newsletter/website but just sending out the details to those who register an interest in taking part. To do that send your e-mail to Kevin Douglas ( ksdouglas@tiscali.co.uk) by April 11th. You will then be notified of each Awayday ride.

Numbers

Rides will be restricted to 24 riders split into 2 groups. The second group will only run if a volunteer leader and back marker come forward. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. A reserve list will be drawn up of people available to fill in a short notice for people who drop out etc.

Ride Dates

The dates for the Awayday Rides are as follows:-

June 20th
July 11th
Aug 15th
Sept 12th
Oct 17th

Ride Organisers

Several people have very kindly offered to organise an Awayday and we are looking for people to do that again this year– especially if they have a knowledge of a ride in an area that will fit the criteria for an Awayday.  Colin and I will offer any advice or help needed. Contact either Colin or Kevin if you are prepared to offer to organise a ride.

Ride Leader

We will split the riders into two groups so we will need ride leaders. They will be required to lead a group but the route will be planned for you with stops etc. Main things needed are a Garmin (or a map) to follow the route and some marshalling skills!  If you volunteer to lead or back mark a group you will obviously be allocated a place on that ride.

What if you miss out on an Awayday?

Details of the route/parking/cafes etc will be posted on the Club website and Members who would like to do the ride could then organise a further group ride on an alternative date.

We are keen to put on an awayday programme but we feel it is important that it is safe and does not put undue pressure on Ride leaders and services in an area. In order to do that we need to exercise more control on numbers and whilst we have not come up with this approach lightly we do feel there is no other way to do it.

Kevin Douglas and Colin Thomson

WHEEL EASY TOUR TO GERMANY - SUNDAY 24 to SATURDAY 30 JUNE 2018, - (7 days/6 nights).

Following 5 very successful Wheel Easy tours with Mercurio Bike Travel, I am delighted to announce details of our 6th annual tour in June 2018, when we will return to Bavaria again.  The tour will follow the River Danube from Regensburg to Passau.

An outline of the tour is as follows:-

  • We will fly with easyJet from Manchester to Munich at 13.25 on 24 June.  The easyJet price at present is under £40 for the outward flight.  The return flight departs Munich at 14.40 on Saturday 30 June arriving in Manchester at 15.50, and is currently also under £40.   Prices usually increase as the plane fills, so early booking of tickets is recommended.
  • Mercurio will meet us from Munich Airport for our transfer to our hotel in Regensburg, where we will start cycling on Monday.  The Mercurio tour will finish in Passau after breakfast on Saturday 30 June, where Mercurio will transfer us back to Munich Airport for our flight home to Manchester.
  • We cycle at a relaxed pace, set by our ride leader Andre, daily mileage is typically between 25 and 35 miles, as there are other activities planned for each day, such as a guided tour or a visit to a local place of interest.  The total distance is 128 miles.
  • We cycle along dedicated cycle paths or quiet roads, admiring the beautiful scenery through the region.
  • Mercurio provide us with bikes and pannier bags, and transport our luggage from hotel to hotel, so we only need to carry our daily needs, such as camera, sun cream, waterproofs, etc., in the pannier bag.
  • Overnight stays are in very comfortable hotels and guest houses.
  • All trips and meals are included in the Mercurio price - the only extras we pay for are drinks.
  • The cost is £995 per person sharing a double/twin room, with a supplement of £140 per person for a single room occupancy.
  • The transfers to and from Manchester Airport (e.g. car sharing, minibus or train) will be agreed nearer the time.
  • For those not in a rush to return home, there is the opportunity to stay on in Passau for a few extra days to explore the beautiful area and surrounding countryside.  We would then have to make our own arrangements to return to Munich Airport and indeed, Eric and I will be staying on for 2 extra days returning on Monday 2 July.
  • Further details are included in the provisional Tour Portrait attached.
  • Provided we have a minimum of 10 in our group by Christmas, this will be a Wheel Easy only tour.  The maximum number we can take is 15.
  • If you are interested or have any further questions, please contact Diane Waters, either by email at:-  dianeewaters@gmail.com,  or mobile:-  07809 063303, in the near future.
